The African American Families Database (AAFD) was developed by CVHR members to connect African-American families to their antebellum roots and enable researchers to trace patterns of community formation in the post-bellum period. The database is hosted by the UVA Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities.

Access to the AAFD is open to the public, however a free account is required. A tutorial for using the database is also available.
